The two main rules in the U.S. tax code that allow businesses to write off equipment purchases quickly are Section 179 expensing and Bonus Depreciation. Both provisions, especially when used in tandem, can allow for a full (100%) deduction of the purchase price in the year the equipment is placed in service, provided specific conditions and limits are met.

10 Ways to Make Your Company A Sustainability Champion Right Now

Sustainable packaging is crucial for reducing waste, conserving resources, and lowering carbon footprints. Companies that adopt eco-friendly practices not only help the environment but also meet growing consumer demand for greener alternatives. Here are 10 ways a company can make its packaging more sustainable:

Use Recycled Materials

Opt for packaging made from post-consumer recycled (PCR) materials. These materials reduce the need for virgin resources, help minimize waste, and lower energy consumption in production. I can supply pallet wraps, mailers, and bubble with a high PCR content.

Prioritize Biodegradable Packaging

Choose packaging made from biodegradable materials like plant-based plastics or paper, which break down naturally over time, reducing long-term environmental impact.  We now have bags and flowable cushioning made from plant-based materials.

Reduce Packaging Size

Minimize the amount of packaging used by optimizing the size of packaging to match the product. This reduces material waste and transportation costs, as well as the carbon footprint from shipping. This is done quickly by downgauging your bags and pallet wrap and auditing your custom packaging. As well, I can help you to reduce the amount of void-fill in your cartons be using your existing void-fill to block and brace.  You don’t always need to enshroud the product in bubble and foam.

Design for Reusability

Design packaging that can be reused for other purposes, such as storage containers or organizers. This encourages consumers to give the packaging a second life rather than disposing of it after a single use.

Adopt Minimalist Packaging

Use simpler designs that eliminate excess layers and unnecessary elements like plastic shrink-wrap or decorative coatings. This reduces waste and makes recycling easier. If the time it takes to break down packaging into it’s separate components, people won’t readily take the time to do it.

Implement Compostable Options

Look into compostable packaging alternatives for products like food or cosmetics. These materials break down in composting environments, reducing landfill waste and enriching soil.  In California, we recycle. It is illegal to use packaging with polylactic acid (PLA), or polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) which facilitate breakdown in natural environments.  Products that contain these chemicals lose their recyclability.

Opt for Sustainable Inks and Dyes

Use vegetable-based or water-based inks and dyes instead of chemical-based ones. These are less harmful to the environment and are often easier to recycle or compost.  If you are purchasing your printed materials here in California, they more than likely already contain these sustainable dyes.

Switch to Plant-Based Plastics

Where plastic packaging is necessary, consider using plant-based plastics (bioplastics) made from renewable resources like cornstarch or sugarcane. These have a smaller environmental footprint compared to traditional petroleum-based plastics.

Establish a Take-Back or Recycling Program

Develop a packaging return program where customers can send back empty packaging to be reused or recycled. This can help close the loop and ensure packaging materials are properly managed.

Collaborate with Eco-Conscious Suppliers

Partner with suppliers and manufacturers who prioritize sustainability in their operations. By working with eco-friendly businesses, companies can ensure that their packaging materials are responsibly sourced and produced.

By adopting these strategies, companies can significantly reduce the environmental impact of their packaging and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Foam represents 30% of the content of the World’s landfills

Foam packaging is one of the cornerstones of the industry. It’s difficult to replace it but not impossible. Recently I have refused to provide foam wine shippers, which I’ve sold for years. The alternatives to foam wine bottle shippers include Molded Rice Flour and Molded Pulp. They also weight almost nothing and because of new technology, cost almost the same.

If you are currently using foam sheets, or foam inserts to ship your product, there may be a better, cleaner, more responsible way to do it. Let’s explore it together – Call or text me. Marco 310-294-7839
